        Artist Statement

"Beginning with a few drawing tools, I take rubbings of objects or surfaces that I find interesting.  This activity is very trial and error, usually providing me with beautiful patterns that form the base layer for the entire piece.  The objects or surfaces I use have no significance to the overall drawing or painting, other than they provide an interesting layer to the final piece. Incorporating a range of mediums and textures, I respond in subsequent layers- sometimes obscuring and sometimes revealing.  I play with the patterns and negative space and build upon them with more pattern, geometric shapes, strong lines and intuitive mark making, until they seem to suggest a mood or feeling.  Sometimes this can be a specific, almost literal feeling, but usually it works in a more intangible way – suggesting a feeling such as anxious energy, or calming space, or the melody of a song."
